If you’re pressed for time, here’s the short version:

Google Calendar has two new options to communicate your work availability.

Create repeating out of office entries

Select “automatically decline meetings” when you create a repeating “out of office” entry. This will send a decline notification if someone tries to schedule a meeting during that “out of office” period.

Split your working hours into multiple segments a day

Use segmentable working hours to let people know when you don’t plan to work during the day. Working hours are visible on your calendar when someone schedules a meeting with you.

When you search for an email address in Gmail, aliases of the searched address will now be considered as well.

That’s pretty neat! For example searching for hello@mailplaneapp.com will now also show emails from support@mailplaneapp.com and vice versa. If you want to retrieve results for that email address only, you can put it in quotes.

Events fewer than 25 minutes will now occupy less space in the daily view and better reflect the true duration of the event.

Previously shorter events were displayed the same as 30-minute events. This will also show in the printed version of the calendar.

Gmail introduced a quick settings menu to change easily between different layouts, settings, and themes.

There are no new settings. It’s just an easier way to access a subset of settings and explore them in real time. All settings are still available by clicking the “See all settings” button at the top of the quick settings menu.

A while ago, Gmail got a new section in the sidebar to launch Google Meet. Now there is a user setting to hide it when you don’t need it.

Go to “Gmail Settings > Chat and Meet” and select “Hide the Meet section in the main menu”. G-Suite admins can also disable Meet for the whole organization by turning off video calling in the Admin console. This will hide that section as well.
